Best Used Tires Review

Best Used Tires ReviewThere are a lot choices online to buy used tires these days. If you have been shopping around online for a bit there is no doubt you have come across the company called Best Used Tires. Since I am a used tire blogger, I tend to look at all these companies with a distrust for what they are selling. To make matters worse, there really isn’t a solid  Best Used Tires review to help you decide if this is who you should trust for used tires.

Before you go and purchase some used treads from them, it is crucial to consider several factors. Do they have tires that meet your requirements? Are the prices competitive? Can they actually meet their own same day shipping promise? What are their guarantees? Are the specs of the tires on the website actually representative of what you receive? What kind of complaints do people have about them?

We will explore all this and more in this Best Used Tires Review. Before we weigh the pros and cons, let us take a closer look at their service offering and who they are…

Is Best Used Tires Legit?

Best Used Tires is an online used tire website with over 50,000 brand name tires. They offer all the popular brands like Firestone, Goodyear, Bridgestone, Continental & BFGoodrich at discount prices up to 65% off retail  They offer free shipping same day on orders before 1PM, price matching on used tires from other sites, and every tire is inspected to ensure it meets the safety standards of the company. All of this is backed by  a 90 day money back guarantee and a hassle free no questions asked returns policy.

Unlike some other user tire companies they don’t claim to have lowest price, but they will price match. They also have many comparison models to display the cost of new tires vs the used tires you are looking at. Their intuitive website lets you shop for used tires in multiple ways, plus they frequently have coupons and discount codes.

If you are new to buying used tires, you may be skeptical about the company and their claims. This is particularly difficult considering they claim to have over 26,000 5 star reviews and it’s on their website…so that doesn’t seem very independent. After all, “verified” reviews on Best Used Tires could be curated to show only what they want you to see so they can claim how reputable they are. In this review, I will present a neutral view of their products, company claims, and their website platform to help you decide if it is they deserve your business.

Before I dive in on the is Best Used Tires review…let’s take a look at who we are reviewing.

Who Are These People…

They are a family owned operation and have been in business for 15 years. They promote sustainability of the environment by selling used tires that meet both safety requirements and the needs of the customer.  Their process is to perform an inspection of each tire 2X. Once when it is received and again when someone orders it. Their inventory is kept in a climate controlled warehouse to prevent weathering, blistering, and defects from the elements.

Here is a quick look at their huge 60,000 square foot warehouse:

What I Like About Best Used Tires

1. Easy Website to Navigate and Find What You Need

Best Used Tire Search FeatureIt is the website that distinguishes Best Used Tires from other sellers. BestUsedTires.com is one of the most intuitive web platforms I have found for finding what you need. They have a far better website and search features when compared to Champ Tires, U Tires, and even big websites like Tire Rack. They have tools to help you find what you need, even if you don’t know exactly what you need.

For example you can search and shop by:

  • Make, model, and year of your vehicle
  • Tire size you need (or by the most popular sizes such as 225/65R17)
  • Vehicle class (car, truck, SUV, tractor, etc…)
  • Availability of matching sets such as single tires, pairs of tires, or sets of four
  • Popular Tire brands (which they carry over 50,000 brands)

Emphasis on Customer Service

They have a live chat feature during business hours, a real phone number to call, and an order status tracking right from their site. Additionally they have a pretty in-depth help center that answers the 20 most frequently asked questions. For whatever is answered in the FAQ, they encourage you to call and ask where you can speak to a human.

Transparency of The Products: Clear Pricing, Specs, and Reviews From Other Customers…

They show 98% of the most important details about each of the tires they sell. This includes the price, the tread depth, the specs, the inspection results, reviews, and clear shipping information for US. Additionally for each tire they provide a comprehensive list of the most popular compatible vehicles and similar tires that have the same specs.

Also, I am a fan of a feature called “recently viewed, so I can shop around and not have to figure out what tires I was looking at earlier. This makes Best Used Tires an all-in-one platform to find used tires that meet your needs.

2. Huge Inventory of Tires with an Emphasis on Matching

While they boast they have over 50,000 brand name tires, I can’t verify that. What I can tell you is they have a lot and it covers all the popular vehicle classes, sizes, and brands.  You can find tires for: Cars, trucks, SUV’s, Commercial trucks,  ATV/UTV’s, trailers, forklifts, etc.

Vehicle TypesSizes and brands run the gamut as well with all the popular sizes and all the popular brands.  If you can’t find a used tire here that meets your needs, you won’t find it anywhere else. They don’t just stop at vehicle tire types either. For example if you are looking for used semi truck tires,  they break the tire positions down for you into drive, steer, and trailer.

If you have ever looked for used tires at your local salvage or used tire shop, you know that finding pairs and sets is sometimes impossible. They make it much easier, by basically showing you what tires they can offer in singles, pairs, and sets of four. This is a big time saver and can allow you to outfit your vehicle in the best way possible.

3. Accurate Tread Depth Measurements and Tires Inspected Twice

Are there tread depth measurements accurate? This is one of the most important questions I needed to answer in this Best Used Tires review…

Tread Depth MeasuremnetsYes! What they advertise on the sire for the amount of tread depth remaining is what you get. I have placed several orders and each time I measure the tread depth when they arrive. So far every time I have ordered I have gotten the same tread depth measurement as advertised. This means I should get the life out of the tire that I paid for, providing my driving habits and car maintenance don’t create unnecessary wear.

Safety is always my first priority over price. The process they have is that they inspect a tire when it comes into their inventory and again when the tire is ordered. If the tire doesn’t pass the first inspection, they don’t sell it. If the tire doesn’t pass the second inspection, they don’t ship it, contact you, and refund you. They grade tires to the R.M.A. standards.

4. Free and Same Day Shipping

If you consider the average passenger car tire weighs about 25 pounds and a semi truck tire can weigh almost 250 pounds, shipping this stuff can be expensive. Free shipping on tires is really important, because you are buying used to save money. If you had to pay for shipping items this heavy it would negate the fact you bought a used tire.

They also offer same day shipping on orders before 1PM. This doesn’t include Sunday, because they are closed. In all of my last 3 orders I ordered before 1PM and received my shipping confirmations the same day.

Transparent About Shipping Times, Signature Requirements, and Where They Can’t Ship To

They are also very transparent on their site about shipping. They tell you up front what price point requires a signature and where they can’t ship (i.e. Canada).  There is a map shown below each tire before you order so you can estimate your shipping times. They are located in the north Eastern US, so naturally eastern states are 1 to w days, middle states are 3 days, and western states are 4 to 5.

5. Best Used Tires Coupon Codes Offered Directly on Their Site

Best Used Tires Coupon CodesSo I used to look around the net for Best Used Tires coupons and discount codes. Pretty much every link I clicked, was either dead or something else all together. Then I discovered the section of their site where they advertise their coupons.

There aren’t always coupons and deals going on. When there are though you will find them and get a code to apply at checkout. They typically have sales around holidays and season changes.

You can find coupons that are for:

  • A certain dollar amount off like $15 off orders of $150 or more.
  • Percentage of like 10% off your total order.
  • Specials on clearance tires.

6. They Actively Answer Complaints Filed Against Them

One thing I did not list as a pro, but important to mention is the 90 day money back, no hassle promise. I can’t say personally in this Best Used Tires review if it’s true and hassle free, because I have never had a reason to return. Since I can’t provide personal context on this important feature I read through a bunch of complaints listed outside of their website. So to do a thorough Best Used Tires review, I scoured through their complaints on the on the Better Business Bureau website.

While I did discover some disgruntled customers. The company actively answers 90% of their complaints and works to resolve the issues. This is a really good sign as they care about their customers and they are ensuring they actively defend their reputation. It seems that the return policy may not be hassle free, but there is sufficient evidence to show they actively issue refunds when merited.

If you are curious about some of the issues that are listed, there have been complaints about shipping times, tires with questionable repairs, refunds etc. Almost all of the complaints have been answered.

7. Multiple Ways to Pay Including Financing

For some folks, this may not be a big deal, but for others it is the biggest deal….

They offer multiple ways to pay. This includes all your traditional credit cards, but also including Apple Pay and Pay Pal. More importantly though they offer financing. You just need to answer a few questions to find out your options and they don’t run a credit check. The truth is we all buy used tires to save money, financing is another way to get what you need now and pay over time.

What I Don’t Like About Best Used Tires

1. Pricing Leaves Room to be Desired

Best Used Tires is not the cheapest used tire spot on the net. The actually don’t claim to be either. In fact, I have found their prices to be sometimes much higher then their competitors. I would imagine with the extra overhead of their huge climate controlled inventory warehouse and the labor costs of inspecting every tire sold 2X adds to the cost of tires. While those two pieces are great on their own, it is definitely reflected in the price.

The fact that they offer used tire price matching is great, but it means you need to shop around, get proof of a lower offer, and do your homework just to order from them. Seems like a bit of hassle, when if you found a lower price at a competitor, then you would just order from the competitor.

2. Inspection Results Listed are Vague

I am someone who goes to a used tire shop and physically inspect every tire I consider buying. I roll it, run my hand around the sidewall, measure the tread depth, look for plugs and patches that don’t seem safe.  This is the disadvantage of ordering online. All they tell you is that it visually passed inspection and an air pressure test.

Every tire they list says the same EXACT thing. This is not very helpful and doesn’t tell you how many repairs are on the tire or how good the patch is. You won’t know until it arrives. Here is what every tire on the site says for inspection results:

Tire Inspection Results

They have a disclaimer that says “It is possible that a tire has been professionally repaired with a stem patch according to RMA guidelines.”

That is all fine and good, but what I want to know is does the tire I am ordering have a repair? Where is the repair? What grade is it?

This is what I don’t like. It feels like rolling the dice and hoping for the best. I have received several tires with repairs. I even once got a tire from them with 2 pretty significant vulcanized patches on the same tire. One of them looked a little shoddy to me, pass the R.M.A. standards sure, just not done well. These are tires I would have thrown back if I was at a used tire shop. If you receive a tire with a questionable repair, some places like Costco may not install and mount it, if they are worried it is unsafe.

Being more transparent about what you are getting would be helpful. Like when I order, sending me a pic of the actual tires and the inside of it so I can confirm I want it before they ship.

3. DOT Years Are All Listed as Not Available

DOT Year MissingDOT stands for Date of Tire. It indicates the week and year the tire was made. You never should by a tire more then 6 years old and replace tires before 10 years. This is recommended by the NHTSA because the chemical compounds in the rubber and how they break down.

While Best Used Tires doesn’t sell any tires prior to 2011 that is still older then any tire I recommend purchasing. I have never received a tire from them older then 6 years, however, it seems the potential is there for that to happen.

Also having the manufacturers DOT, would allow me to better price out my purchase. If I saw a used tire was 5 years old already and super cheap, I would better understand why. If I saw a newer tire was one years old and was more expensive I could justify the cost better.

I understand why this is difficult. They have a huge inventory and this listing is to describe possibly hundreds of tires. That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t come up with a way to solve that.  If I bought used tires from someone on eBay they list the DOT year or provide it to me if I ask for it.

4. Most UTQG Ratings are Listed as Not Available

UTQG MissingUTQG stands for Universal Tire Quality Grade. It is a set of standards for passenger car tires that measures a tire’s tread wear, temperature resistance and traction. Essentially the higher the UTQG rating is the longer the tire will last. So a tire with a 600 tread wear rating will last 2X as long (2X the mileage) as a tire with a 300 rating.

Since they don’t have this listed for all the tires, you need to do research to find out how long the tire is expected to last. For every tire you are considering you should look up the UTQG rating from the manufacturer.  You want to take the rating and compare it to the tread depth measurement. This is a pain that they are missing UTQG’s for many tires.

5. They Don’t Carry Every Vehicle Type

Most people are buying car and truck tires and not much out of the ordinary. I couldn’t do a complete Best Used Tires review with out mentioning what they don’t have…

While they do carry way more then most, I have come across a few times where they haven’t had what a customer was looking for. A few examples are used RV tires (G670’s and XRV’s), used golf cart tires, and used lawn mower tires. There are alternatives though for these for example you can (and should) put truck tires on an RV.

For most people they will have everything you want and more.

Best Used Tires Review Conclusion

My philosophy on this blog is to never choose price over safety. Also I always write about reputation and buying from someone you can trust. I have made several purchases and helped others find what they need at Best Used Tires. While There are things I don’t love like receiving tires with repairs, I find their tread depth measurements accurate, prices fair for the quality, and I like free same day shipping. I have yet to do a return or have a problem with any of the used tires I have purchased from them. I hope you found this to be the most thorough Best Used Tires review.
